What types of volunteer opportunities do you have?
Most of the volunteers at the Boys and Girls Club work directly with our young people. Activities range from playing pool in the games room to homework help during the school year in our Learning Center. There are many different areas in our Club, so there is sure to be something that will interest you. We offer programming in arts/music/dance/theater, learning/academics, health and life skills, science and technology, and recreation and sports. We always need assistance with mentoring, serving meals in our cafeteria, special events and chaperoning field trips. There is always something going on at the Club to get involved in.

We serve over 13,000 kids on average per year between our sites and through our Youth Resource Center programs. We have two main sites at 160 S. Badger Ave. in Appleton and 600 Racine St. in Menasha. What are your hours that I can come and volunteer?
The afterschool programs at our Downtown site and Menasha site run from 3:00 - 7:00 PM, Monday through Friday. Check out The CLUB Teen Center of Appleton and The CLUB Teen Center of Menasha pages to learn about hours. School site hours vary.

Our summer hours are 7:00 AM - 5:30 PM, Monday through Friday. We follow the schedule for Appleton Area School District for half days of school, days off school and spring/holiday breaks. On half days of school the Club opens at Noon and is open until 7:00 PM. On days off of school and breaks, the Club is open from 8:00 AM - 5:30 PM.

What type of commitment do you ask for from volunteers?
We are very flexible in hours, and can work around your schedule. You are not required to volunteer a certain number of hours per week or month. We encourage you to choose a time you can commit to, as your frequent and ongoing presence makes all the difference in the life of a child. We ask that you commit for a length of time that is do-able for you (school year or summer for example).

What is the process to be brought on at the Club as a volunteer?
The first step is to complete the volunteer application. Once this is submitted, background checks and reference checks will be completed. Once positive reference checks and a clear background check have been secured, the application packet is approved. You will be invited for a volunteer orientation at that time where policies and procedures will be reviewed and we will discuss your interest areas and availability.
[ top ]

How long does it take to become an approved volunteer?
Once your volunteer application is received, background checks are ran. We run a federal background check, a Wisconsin check and a sex offender registry check. Time to complete the required checks varies.

Reference checks are also completed. Time to complete reference checks vary by applicant depending on reference availability. Once a volunteer is approved, the person is invited to attend a volunteer orientation.

The standard timeframe to be brought on board from application to volunteer orientation is typically 2-4 weeks. The application process can be shorter or longer depending on time of year. Be sure to alert your references that they will receive a contact from the Boys and Girls Club, and encourage them to respond promptly.

Do you accept volunteers that need community service hours?
We do not accept applications for community service from anyone over the age of 18. If you are under the age of 18 and need community service hours, it depends on what you need the community service hours for. Please discuss this with Katie Hickey, the Volunteer Coordinator.

I need service hours for school; can I volunteer at the Club?
We welcome students that need service hours for school. Please turn in your application to the Club in plenty of time before the service hours are due. This allows time to get your application processed and to complete the volunteer orientation. We will do our best to accommodate tight deadlines, but cannot guarantee turnaround time should the applicant wait until the last minute.

Please contact us for more information.

What is the minimum age to volunteer at the Club?
Volunteers must be at least 16 years of age.
